He started a discussion recently on the FF Members list that will lead to a Firebird 1.5.5 release, fixing recently published vulnerabilities and that also lead to a build of Firebird 2.0 that relaxes the Alias Restrictions introduced with 2.0 (and that is nicknamed "Vlankbild" by the Community :-)
